SUCCESS OF A NATION depends on the health, ability and commitment of its citizens. So far, Nigeria has registered many successes in its quest for greatness. The economic and population indexes indicate a nation that is steadily making progress; however, the quality-of-life of its citizens does not reflect a positive trend. Quality-of-life is measured in different ways, part of which is fitness and lifestyle. Fitness and lifestyle are inseparable because your level of fitness or health is reflected in your lifestyle; this in turn translates into performance or contribution to society.

Any successful athlete will tell you that it takes discipline to excel. Weight training and/or other forms of sports are ideal ways of teaching discipline to youth or elders. Exercise is a common denominator for all humans irrespective of age. Early forms of exercise is an excellent way of building a youth's fitness routine and ability, which in turn teaches discipline and helps him or her live a healthy lifestyle.

My personal experience as an athlete playing American football in my early teenage years in Dallas, Texas helped me to get physically fit and live a healthy and happy lifestyle. We were required to lift weights and run on a daily basis. That habit has remained with me and has become part of my daily lifestyle. Exercise is a great way to build self confidence, be healthy, look good and gain discipline, as well as increase your life expectancy.

As the publisher of Daniel Kanu Fitness and Lifestyle Magazine, I intend to bring to you each month a series of professional recommendations, real life fitness successes and various aspects of lifestyle that will touch your heart and put smile on your face. You, as a reader, will also have the opportunity to give me your thoughts and feedback on those recommendations, which will be published in the monthly editions.

John F. Kennedy, former President of the United States said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country': I want to help transform our country through fitness. I believe that if we all find a way to make a positive impact on the lives of other people, our society can be transformed in ways greater than we have ever imagined. This life philosophy has inspired me to share my personal experiences through this medium, with the hope of positively impacting the lives of all people irrespective of race, gender or age.
