The Most Prestigious Award
At the age of 75, American singer and song writer Bob Dylan was awarded the Noble Prize in literature, “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.” making him the first ever songwriter to receive the prize as well as the first American in almost 24 years following the American writer Toni Morrison, whom was awarded the prize back in 1993.
This prestigious international award is granted within the fields of; literature, medicine, physics, chemistry, peace, and economics. About 573 awards have been awarded since its establishment in 1895 when “Alfred Nobel signed his last will and testament, giving the largest share of his fortune to a series of prizes”.[1] The first prize was presented in 1901,allowing each recipient to receive an amount of money reaching about 1million dollar or more, as agreed upon by the Nobel Foundation, a diploma and a gold medal. The award ceremony is held in Stockholm Sweden, except for that of the peace prize, which is held in Oslo Norway, awards may be shared between no more than 3 people and are still given even after the passing of the recipient.
In the year 1901, Wilhelm Röntgen was the first ever recipient of the noble prize in Physics for the discovery of X-rays, while Marie Curie was the first female recipient in 1903, along side her husband “in recognition of the extraordinary services they have rendered by their joint researches on the radiation phenomena discovered by Professor Henri Becquerel."[2], the first within a total of 48 women, a small number in comparison to the male recipients number of 822.
